Do You Wanna Build a Bomb-e?
Being in this Mother-Daughter book club sure is giving me lots of opportunities to cook up new stuff.
Our latest book was Bomb: The Race to Build - and Steal - the World's Most Dangerous Weapon by Steve Sheinkin. I loved this book, although it was probably a tad hard for our 4th grade girls (the book is recommended for 5th-9th graders). It's about the race to build the first atomic bomb. Even though it's non-fiction, it reads like a James Bond espionage thriller. It was a Newbery Honor Medal winner as well as a finalist for the National Book Award. Highly recommended!
In honor of Bomb, I thought it would be fun to "build - and serve -" our own bombe, the frozen dessert kind, of course!
Mango Raspberry Sorbet Bombe

Serves 10 - 12
It's surprisingly easy to build a bombe. There's no cooking involved. Just buy three different flavors of sorbet, ice cream or frozen yogurt (or a mix of the three) and layer them in a round bowl.
First, line an 8" wide (2-qt) freezer-proof bowl with plastic wrap. Freeze bowl.

Mango Raspberry Sorbet Bombe

Serves 10 - 12
It's surprisingly easy to build a bombe. There's no cooking involved. Just buy three different flavors of sorbet, ice cream or frozen yogurt (or a mix of the three) and layer them in a round bowl.
First, line an 8" wide (2-qt) freezer-proof bowl with plastic wrap. Freeze bowl.
When bowl is cold, place inside:
2 pints Mango Sorbet, softened
Spread an even layer against sides of bowl. You can also use a plastic-wrapped nesting bowl (6 1/2" is a good size) to help create a more uniform thickness. Freeze for about 30 minutes or until firm.
Remove bowl from freezer (and nesting bowl if using) and place inside:
1 1/2 pints Raspberry Sorbet, softened
Again, spread an even layer over the mango layer. Use a plastic-wrapped nesting bow (4 1/2" wide) to help mold the raspberry layer. Freeze for another 30 minutes or until firm.
Finally, remove bowl from freezer (and nesting bowl if using) and spoon inside:
1 pint Frozen Strawberry Yogurt, softened (or enough to fill)
Cover top with plastic wrap and freeze until firm.
To unmold, remove bombe from freezer and let sit for a minute. Peel off the plastic wrap covering top of bowl. Then grab the edges of the plastic wrap lining the bowl. Pull gently all around the edges of the bowl until loosened. Place a flat plate on top of bowl and invert. Peel off plastic wrap and cut into wedges to serve.
